KANSAS CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KCI)
STORMWATER CHANNEL FLUME:
The flume at the end of a large concrete-lined stormwater channel at KCI had experienced severe erosion, bank instability, and deterioration of the concrete. TSi planned and completed a subsurface exploration program and geotechnical engineering services to determine soil conditions in the area, as well as needed repairs. TSi prepared a geochemical report with recommendations for reconstruction of the flume.
RUNWAY AND TAXIWAY PAVEMENT EVALUATIONS - PART 1:
TSi provided pavement evaluation services for all
runways and taxiways at KCI. The project consisted of the completion of an inventory of the condition of runway and taxiway pavements, to be utilized within a new system that was developed to prioritize and rank areas in order of most urgent need of repair. For areas where subgrade failures were possible, recommendations for geotechnical investigation of these areas were also developed and submitted in the final report.
RUNWAY AND TAXIWAY PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS - PART 2:
TSi provided construction observation, field materials testing and laboratory testing services for concrete repairs to the runways and taxiways at KCI. TSi also conducted a subsurface exploration in areas where deterioration of the runways appeared to be due to subgrade problems. TSi
evaluated the subgrade soils and developed remedial measures to improve the subgrades.
OTTAWA AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS:
TSi provided geotechnical engineering services for the repaving of Ottawa Avenue, used by service trucks, within the secured airfield at KCI. TSi planned and completed a subsurface exploration program including configuring traffic control for the work. TSi also performed laboratory testing on soil samples. The final geotechnical report summarized existing pavement conditions, existing pavement sections, subgrade conditions, and recommended reconstruction of pavement sections in areas needing repair.
TERMINAL LOOP ROADS A, B AND C RECONSTRUCTION:
TSi provided on-site construction observation and materials testing services for improvements to A, B and C Loop roads, including islands, curbs and gutters. TSi observed and verified pavement subgrade, fill placement, asphaltic concrete pavement, and cast-in-place concrete, as well as performed laboratory testing associated with field observations. Density testing was provided on asphalt base and surface materials. For B Loop Road, TSi observed construction of the pedestrian bridge foundations. C Loop Road improvements were required due to increased traffic due to US Airways and United Airlines moving into Terminal C. To limit interference with airport operations, much of the work was completed during night shifts.
FIELD MAINTENANCE FACILITY RENOVATIONS:
TSi services for this project were construction observation of fill and pavement construction at the Field Maintenance Facility.
ROAD AND PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS:
Over multiple years, TSi has provided geotechnical engineering services for the evaluation of pavements for numerous roadways, parking lots, sidewalks and bus stop shelters in KCI. TSi conducted subsurface explorations, collecting core sections of existing pavements where repairs were planned, then testing to determined thickness, materials, and conditions as well as evaluating subgrade soils for the new pavements. During construction, TSi observed and documented repairs to subgrades, and placement of asphalt pavement, and concrete curbs and sidewalks, and completed laboratory testing on all concrete, fill and asphalt materials. Most work was completed during midnight shifts to avoid interfering with airport traffic.
